FAQ's

Yes, all students attending the first-year student program must spend the night at Orientation. The overnight portion of the program is specifically designed to allow students a chance to become familiar with the campus and to meet their peers. Through various planned academic and social activities, students will experience a taste of college, and the overnight stay will ensure students are on time for the early start of the second day.

The one-day Orientation for families is optional, but recommended. There is an additional $75 fee for each guest.

If you decide not to attend Orientation you must cancel through my.uic.edu at least seven days prior or fees will be applied to your account.

An Orientation Fee Discount Request form is available. The discount request, along with documentation verifying the information you have supplied must be faxed, mailed or delivered to the UIC Orientation Program at least seven days prior to your orientation program date. Submitting a form does not guarantee approval. Please contact orhelp@uic.edu or (312) 996-3271 for inquiries about your pending request. We cannot accept any request forms submitted after you have participated in your orientation program.

This fee covers the invitation mailing, meals, the services of the Student Orientation Leaders and reservations staff, and all associated program materials and activity costs.

If you are changing majors within the same college at UIC (e.g., changing from Accounting to Finance within the College of Business), you will inform your advisor at orientation and they will give you further instructions.

If you wish to change majors into a different college at UIC (e.g., changing from the College of Business to the College of Engineering), this is a process called Intercollege Transfer. Please inform your advisor at orientation to determine your next steps.

Please note that each college has a different process for intercollege transfer; however, many colleges require that you have a UIC GPA established before you can apply. This means you may not be able to start the intercollege transfer process until you have completed your first semester at UIC. Please contact the college you wish to transfer into for their specific intercollege transfer requirements.

Advising appointments are your chance to begin the process of taking responsibility for your academic life and to begin to develop essential decision-making skills with the support of your professional advisor. We encourage you to talk with your family about any questions or concerns before Orientation to ensure that those items are addressed.

Because there are many students registering for and switching out of classes at any given time, openings in other classes may become available at the beginning of the semester. You may have the opportunity to secure a desired class (if offered) following Orientation. Substantive changes made after Orientation should be discussed with your academic advisor prior to the start of the term. More information on class registration and scheduling will be provided to you during your academic advising session.

All new international students attending UIC on a non-immigrant visa status must complete the Office of International Services (OIS) check-in process prior to attending the UIC Undergraduate Orientation by bringing immigration documents to the OIS office. In addition to attending Orientation, please be sure to attend the New International Student Welcome Events offered through the Office of International Services.

If you have additional questions please contact UIC Orientation at (312) 996-3271 or at orhelp@uic.edu.
