Freshman Welcome Dinner

Weeks of Welcome Service Project

Date: 8/25/2017

Location: Sheridan Park (meet at UIC Quad)

Meet other first year and transfer students like you who want to volunteer, connect, and give back!
Make a difference in the UIC neighborhood by volunteering a couple of hours to help the Chicago Park District clean and maintain Sheridan Park (a park adjacent to UIC’s East Campus). Meet fellow volunteers in the UIC Quad at 8:30am. Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement staff will then lead all volunteers to Sheridan Park. All volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes.

Involvement Fair

The Involvement Fair is UIC’s premier outdoor festival promoting over 200 student organizations, campus departments, community partners and vendors seeking to connect with new and returning students, undergraduate and graduate/professional students as well as faculty and staff. This year’s event will be held over TWO days with extended hours allowing students to visit more groups. The volunteer fair, promoting various local, regional and national volunteer opportunities has joined the Involvement Fair this year. For undecided students, the Major and Minor Block Party will connect departments and their affiliated groups in a unique experience to promote engagement opportunities that support learning both inside and outside of the classroom.

He endeavors to use diverse media (paint, print, mosaic, poetry, music) and various artistic styles (from realism to abstract) to cause the onlooker to have an encounter between who they are and who they are purposed to be.  As a public arts artist and rapper, Reed has never been tied to one artistic medium, but he stays true to one message: To birth the creativity for vision in others.

Opening Reception of Exhibit Cavalcade of the American Negro

Date: 9/6/2017

Curated by Jacqueline Smith Cavalcade of the American Negro uses objects, images and historical narrative to explore the legacy of the Chicago’s 1940 American Negro Exposition. The 1940 Exposition, hosted by the historic Chicago Coliseum, marked 75 years of African-American freedom from slavery, and publicly presented the accomplishments of Black Americans to public audiences. Visitors to the exhibit are invited to page through the book, Cavalcade of the American Negro, an exhaustive history of Black accomplishments and achievements.

September G.I.V.E. (Get Involved with Volunteer Experiences)

Location: McCormick Bird Sanctuary at the Burnham Wildlife Corridor (2400 S Lake Shore Dr)

Volunteer with the Chicago Park District to help with trail building and to clear invasive plant species in the Burnham Wildlife Corridor at the McCormick Bird Sanctuary. Volunteers can either meet in the lobby at Student Center East at 9:15am and carpool, or meet at the Bird Sanctuary at 10am. Space is limited, so email Maux Sullivan at msulli9@uic.edu today to confirm your spot!
Monthly G.I.V.E. events offer students the opportunity to come together and serve local communities on a regular basis.  Past G.I.V.E. events have included beach clean-ups, Greater Chicago Food Depository repack shifts, improving area schools, contributing to food drives, and more!  Students can indicate an area interest and staff will try to set up a related G.I.V.E. event sometime during the academic year.

UIC Revelry

UIC Revelry is the university’s annual carnival for students and the surrounding campus community. This year Revelry boasts 16 attractions including carnival rides, midway games, food trailers and even a Ferris Wheel and carousel. Admission to Revelry is free. UIC students with a valid i-Card are able to ride all rides for free.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. Show your support to end domestic violence by painting your left ring fingernail purple. A painted nail is an easy and empowering way for you to start a conversation about domestic violence and shattering the silence.
